The time has come to show you around my stomping grounds right here in southern Illinois! After all, we have way more than cornfields around here! We have an excellent wine trail that grows every year and if you know me, you know I love wine. Southern Illinois is a great place to visit whether you are just passing through or taking a Midwest weekend getaway. I’ve been to almost all the wineries here in southern IL and today I’m dishing about all the best ones in case you swing on through our area. (We hope you do!!)
This German-inspired winery AND brewery have both a large outdoor patio and indoor seating area. They have several wines and craft beers to choose from and their food is great too. I’ve tried their grilled pizza and soft pretzels and both are so good! My favorite wines here are Johnny Apple and Canyon Gold.
They have a lot of local musicians come in so there is always someone playing. I’ve seen everyone from families to bachelorette parties to an older crowd here for polka!
In addition to the winery & brewery, they also have a bed and breakfast where you can stay. This winery is my new favorite since my old favorite closed down.
Owl Creek is nestled in the rolling hills of Cobden. I’m not a fan of their Sangria (it has dry wine in it and I’m not a dry-wine gal), but their sweet wine is so good AND they have adorable owl glasses. Of course, I always end up purchasing my glass when I go. 🙂 They have a completely new facility which I’m excited to visit!!
Be sure to use the address on their website to get there, as the GPS will take you to a random field if you don’t!
A beautiful piece of Tuscany right here in southern Illinois, Blue Sky boasts so many award-winning wines that they are about out of room for all the awards on their wall! My favorite wine here is Mysterioso which is similar to a Moscato wine. They also have fabulous Sangria! You can find their wines all over the tri-state area now and for good reason – they are EPIC.
If you’re lucky, you may even get to see some Salukis at one of the wineries you visit!! I got to visit with some of the actual SIU mascots at Blue Sky!
Pomona Winery boasts delicious wines that are strictly made from local fruit rather than grapes! They have a pretty indoor tasting room as well as a deck with a relaxing view of the woods!
Want to drink wine in a 1940’s Peach Barn while you take in a scenic view? Hedman Orchard & Vineyards is your place! Boasting a Swedish-inspired menu and delicious vins, you won’t leave Hedman disappointed. They also often have live local musicians featured in their winery. We loved the cheese plate here!
Last, but definitely NOT least, is Starview. Their food is delicious! You can never go wrong with a nice spinach & artichoke dip, soft pretzels, BBW nachos or their amazing bread and oil. They have many award-winning wines and an amazing Sangria slushie!! (They serve it in a plastic cup you can take home with you.)
They often have Paint Night-type events here (which I’ve attended!) and live music as well. The grounds are gorgeous and they often have events supporting other local businesses and charities like local animal shelters.
The best part? They are animal-friendly and you can bring your dog with you! 🙂
Walker’s Bluff is the most upscale winery in the area, now serving its own wines. When they started, they served their wines along with others, but now they exclusively serve Walker’s Bluff wines. They have a vast menu full of delicious shareables, starters, and entrees. They hold a lot of private events but also have live music a lot on the weekends. Their Wine Cave is pretty epic and definitely a must-see!
Soon they are adding on a resort and casino to their property too!
Located just off one of the main highways is Honker Hill. They have many great wines but I especially loved their Sangria!! Their property is gorgeous and I can’t wait to go back sometime!
