We get a lot of questions about what we do with Sassy when we travel. The short answer is that we board her. We could definitely hire a pet sitter and know a great one, but boarding is the better option for us. It can be scary leaving your pet at a boarding facility, but if you find a great one you can travel with your mind at ease! Here’s how we chose Sassy’s boarding facility!
The longest trip we’ve ever taken since we had Sassy was to Paris and we were gone for 8 days total. Other than that, we are normally only gone 2-4 days at a time.
Traveling without pets is hard because you miss them so much, but the key is to find a reliable and loving boarding facility or pet sitter.
Why We Don’t Use a Pet Sitter
Sassy is a Husky and is crate trained. Unfortunately, we just can’t leave her out free-roaming the house for her own safety. We could hire a pet sitter to come and care for her, but we didn’t like the idea of her spending so many hours in her crate.
Boarding Gets a Bad Rep
I feel bad for boarding facilities because most of the time people talk smack about them. We have always boarded Sassy at facilities that doubled as daycare facilities. We have always had a great experience!!
We have found not one, but TWO amazing ones locally.
What We Love About Our Boarding Facility
Free Play for the Dogs
My absolute favorite thing about our boarding place is that the dogs are allowed to roam a huge room and outside area freely. Sassy gets to socialize with other dogs and play. She has an absolute blast while we are gone! And when we get home she is super worn out, it’s a win-win!!
We Can Check On Sassy
Our boarding facility posts photos daily to their Facebook page so we can see Sassy having a blast with her friends while we are gone. Occasionally they post a video too! It’s so fun and gives me peace of mind knowing she’s doing okay.
What to Look for In Your Boarding Facility
You should also consider that legitimate boarding facilities require proper vaccinations for the dogs that board and play there.
Also, our boarding facility has cameras that the owner has access to constantly. We feel really safe knowing they have this in place. Not only can she monitor the dogs from home, but someone is always watching them and the caregivers interact daily. The peace of mind is worth the price!
