We get a lot of questions about what we do with Sassy when we travel. The longest trip we’ve ever taken since we had her was to Paris and that was 8 days that we were gone. Other than that, we are only gone 2-3 days at a time. Traveling without pets is hard because you miss them so much, but the key is to find a reliable boarder or pet sitter.
We could hire a pet sitter to come and care for her, but we didn’t like the idea of her spending so many hours in her crate. We also considered hiring a house sitter to be with her, but we didn’t really have anyone that was able to do it while we were gone and we didn’t want to hire some random person to care for her and our house.
So we boarded her, and you know what? We had a great experience!! I feel like boarding places get a bad rep sometimes, but we have found not one, but TWO amazing ones locally. They also have doggy daycare which we ended up enrolling her in.
What does our local boarding place do that we love??
My absolute favorite thing about our boarding place is that the dogs are allowed to roam a huge room and outside area freely. Sassy gets to socialize with other dogs and play. She has an absolute blast while we are gone! And when we get home she is super worn out, it’s a win-win!!
Posts photos to their Facebook page daily.
Our local boarding place posts photos daily to their Facebook page so we can see Sassy having a blast with her friends. Occasionally they post a video too! It’s so fun.
They have security cameras.
Our boarding facility has cameras that the owner has access to constantly. We feel really safe knowing they have this in place. Not only can she monitor the dogs from home, but someone is always watching them and the caregivers interact daily. The peace of mind is worth the price!
I would love to eventually have a pet sitter come and sit with Sass though. Hopefully, we can do that instead in a few years!
I know some friends of mine use pet sitters, so I created this free worksheet that you can download when you’re traveling without pets. As a BONUS, I’ve created one in case you have multiple dogs or pets. Sign up below and I’ll email ’em right over to ya!
