As I mentioned previously, I drove my car on the road trip I took from southern Illinois to Orlando, Florida. St. Augustine was one of two day trips I took from Orlando. The drive to St. Augustine was shorter than my drive to Clearwater. The distance from Orlando to St. Augustine was only about an hour and a half away.
St. Augustine Lighthouse
St. Augustine is one of the cutest places I’ve ever seen. It has so many little kitschy stores and coffee shops in the downtown area. I wish I would’ve had more time to explore that area by itself! I thought it would be so fun to stay down there in one of the hotels since they were right by the water.
My first stop was the St. Augustine Lighthouse because I’ve always wanted to go up into a lighthouse. I’ve sort of had a thing for them for a long time now. I even had that cute Scentsy lighthouse. Visiting lighthouses in New England is still on my list, but the St. Augustine one was awesome. The view was different than I imagined. You were able to see the ocean, of course, but there were sand bars also that I didn’t realize were there. I also visited the Lighthouse museum which was rich with history about the people who care for the lighthouse in the past.
Castillo de San Marcos
It’s crazy to think of all the history that is there with St. Augustine being the oldest city in the United States. My next stop was Castillo de San Marcos. What a cool place! I love that places like the Castillo have been preserved so well. It was interesting to explore the fort, and learn the unique history of what made St. Augustine the perfect place for this particular fort.
I definitely wish I would’ve had more than a day here, but I fit in as much as I possibly could! Have you been to St. Augustine? Leave me a comment below and tell me where to go next time!
