Another way we afford to travel, besides saving money when we book trips, is finding ways to save money at our actual destinations! How do we do that? I’m about to hit ya with the knowledge. Here are our top tips for saving money while traveling as a couple!
#1 – We purchase flights at special times.
Did you know if you purchase flights on Tuesday afternoons, that’s when they are the cheapest?! We always purchase our flights 6 months in advance. When we booked our tickets to Paris, we purchased them when it was still Winter so we got a cheaper rate because of this as well.
#2 – I use Hotels.com to book our hotels.
I use Hotels.com because they give you a free night after booking 10 nights with them. As you can see, I’ve accumulated 5 nights so far this year:
The Hotels.com app automatically compares hotel prices for me and it’s where I find the best deals. I don’t want to go to 75 different websites to book my hotel and compare prices, so I use the Hotels.com app.
#3 – We share entrees while traveling.
Sure, we splurge on dishes when we are traveling, but when we are traveling we are exploring. Also, we often don’t make time for formal lunches because we love to explore. Many times we will go to a restaurant and share appetizers or an entree. This way, we don’t get too full to walk around and we also save money!
#4 – We don’t buy souvenirs.
We buy our kids ONE gift from the places we go and we buy ourselves a magnet to commemorate our visit to a new place! The only exception that I’ve made to this rule was when we travel internationally. We would much rather splurge on an experience like a gator-spotting cruise rather than spend $200 on trinkets.
#5 – We often avoid touristy areas.
Travel to us means exploring places off the beaten path and trying foods in random places. We love to explore areas outside of the norm and often seek these experiences out. If you explore outside the tourist areas of your destination, you’ll find prices AND wait times drop!
