Another way we afford to travel, besides saving money when we book trips, is finding way to save money at our actual destinations! How do we do that? I’m about to hit ya with the knowledge. Here are our top tips for budget travel when planning AND when you are at destinations!
#1 – We purchase flights at specific times.
We always purchase our flights at least 6 months in advance. When we booked our tickets to Paris, we purchased them when it was still Winter so we got a cheaper rate because of this as well. Also, if you purchase flights on Tuesday afternoons, that’s when they are the cheapest! Flights are the only thing I don’t book through TripAdvisor.
#2 – I always use TripAdvisor to book our hotels.
TripAdvisor automatically compares hotel prices for me even on sites like Booking.com. It’s where I plan our trips so it makes it the most convenient option because it’s all in on place. I don’t want to go to 75 different websites to book my hotel and rent my car. I do it through TripAdvisor.
#3 – We share entrees while traveling.
Sure, we splurge on dishes when we are traveling, but when we are traveling we are exploring. We don’t make time for formal lunches. So a lot of times we will go to a restaurant and share appetizers or an entree. This way, we don’t get too full to walk around and we also save money.
#4 – We don’t buy souvenirs.
We buy our kids ONE gift from where we go and we buy ourselves next to nothing. Michael always buys a magnet to commemorate our visit to a new place. The only exception I’ve made to this rule was I did buy a tote bag that said Paris IN Paris. We would much rather splurge on an experience rather than spend $200 on trinkets.
#5 – We don’t stay in touristy areas.
Travel to us means exploring places off the beaten path and trying foods in random places. I get nervous about it at times because umm food poisoning?! But you only live once people (YOLO!!). I accept the feeling and then I move past it. Once you get away from the tourist attraction or touristy area, you will find prices at restaurants drop a bit, a lot of the time. 🙂
