Have you ever wonder how people can afford to travel so often? One of the most popular questions we get is “where to next?” We are always headed somewhere! We are just regular people with 9-5’s, two kids, a Husky, and a mortgage. So how do we do it? I’m sharing just 5 ways we afford to travel today!
#1: We use Southwest Points.
Michael has a Southwest credit card that we have racked up some major points on by using it when we travel. We will use it when we go to St. Louis, which we do frequently, and then pay it off when we get home. We used it for our Paris trip recently also, which will pay for our flights wherever we want here in the near future. We used it to go to San Francisco a few years ago – it paid for both of our flights in full!
#2: I book hotels on TripAdvisor.
I book hotels through TripAdvisor because that is always the easiest way for me to find the best hotel deals. I’ve tried other sites, I’ve used other sites. I like TripAdvisor and get the best deals there so that’s what I use. Also, if there is a better deal on a website like Booking.com or Hotels.com, they have that information on there. TripAdvisor plays a huge role in how I plan trips, so it’s even more convenient to book hotels through there.
#3: Our 8-5 jobs give us vacation time.
The last job I had, I only got one week of vacation. It wasn’t working for us because we like to travel and do long weekends. I changed jobs earlier this year, and before I did, I made sure my new job had ample vacation time. I started my job on 5/30 and was able to take a week off paid by the time we went to Paris a month into my new job. Michael is in the same situation – he switched jobs in January and had a little over a week also. You cannot base your entire job situation on vacation, but it was super important to me and I made it a priority to make sure I got enough time off.
4. I sold things on Poshmark.
To afford souvenirs and other things in Paris, I sold A LOT of my stuff that I wasn’t using on the Poshmark app. Most of my stuff sold within a few days to a week and I made $250 for our Paris trip using it. (If you enter code ‘LAURA5009’ here, you’ll get a $5 off coupon!)
5. Good old fashioned saving Money.
Michael is a big-time money saver. He’s fantastic with money and we are able to save a lot in order to go on our trips. He has taught me a lot about money and managing finances. I’ve always struggled with needs vs wants and he is helping me budget my money and plan better all the time.
