I’ve been involved in some form or another of hiring for the past 8 years. Countless times I wanted to reach out to these applicants directly and shake them because of silly errors that could easily be fixed. You don’t need a college degree to know how to write a resume and do it properly. If you spend the extra time perfecting yours, it can be the difference between missing a shot at an interview and getting your dream job!
Here are my top 3 resume tips:
Get a professional email address.
This drives me absolutely CRAZY. If I’m emailing you, I would like to email you at a professional-looking email address. Can you imagine if the email monitor powers that be at my workplaces saw me emailing someone with dorkburger in the email address?! These are REAL examples of emails I’ve seen recently: dorkburger, artbycoke, downboydown, pupbellarosey (Am I emailing a dog?!). I’ve even had people email me from a family member’s email address. For the love of all things holy people, get your own professional-looking email address!! email@example.com is free! If you can’t get that one, add the year you were born or put an extra character in it.
Mind any gaps.
If you were a stay at home mom for 3 years, put it on your resume. I don’t need to know how often you cleaned your house, I just need to know you weren’t in jail. And if you were in jail, tell me about the volunteer work or the job you did in jail. Tell me something! Don’t leave your resume with gaps in it.
Come up with a creative summary of yourself.
I don’t need to know that you are a single mom. I need to know if you are organized, dependable, and hard-working. I don’t want to see something you copied and pasted from a website. 🙂
EXAMPLE: “My objective is to obtain a position where my experience and expertise can be utilized as an asset to the company to help meet company’s goals and objectives for success.” This was clearly copied off a website or came from an objective generator website y’all. This particular person had managerial experience too!! If I were this applicant I would write the following: “Dependable and enthusiastic shift leader looking to increase productivity at your company!” Tell that hiring manager what you can BRING to her company. What is that company missing by not having you on their team?! Think about it… I’ll wait. Got it??? Okay, good, now tell them THAT.
There you have it. My top 3 ways to instantly improve your resume!
